Finland — Immigration & Visas

CHIKIECHIKIE · IMMIGRATION & VISAS

Find your starting point for Finland.

The right Finnish entry or residence process depends on your citizenship, purpose, intended length of stay, existing residence status and, where relevant, family circumstances. There is no single immigration checklist that fits everyone.

ChikieChikie provides independent explanations to help you understand the broad routes and find the responsible official authorities. This overview helps you choose where to begin; use the relevant official instructions for your own application.

Which Process Applies to You?

Start with your plans and status. If you are an EU/EEA/Swiss citizen, a Nordic citizen or a relevant family member, check the separate routes below before following ordinary non-EU residence-permit information.

Visiting Finland

Short visits and permission to reside are different processes. For actual visa instructions, begin with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Finnish mission responsible for your application.

Visa-Free Visits and Entry Conditions

Visa-free entry still has conditions, including accepted travel documents and permitted length of stay. Check the official guidance for your circumstances; do not treat a short visit as permission to settle or work.

Transit

Changing flights within an international airport transit area differs from a journey requiring entry into the Schengen area. An airport-transit visa may be required in some circumstances. Check your route, documents and applicable exemptions with the responsible official authority.

Coming for seasonal work? Check the Seasonal Work route even if your stay is short. General budgeting, bookings and baggage preparation belong in our Travel Abroad guide.

Moving to Finland

The routes below orient readers who may need a Finnish residence permit. EU/free-movement cases follow their own procedures. Other grounds may also apply: use Migri’s official Application Finder if your situation does not fit these examples.

Studies

This route concerns government permission connected with studying in Finland. Admission to an institution and immigration permission are separate stages. Research institutions and prepare admission applications through our related study guides.

Family Ties

The appropriate application depends on the family relationship and the status of the family member in Finland, often called the sponsor. Spouses, children, guardians and other relatives do not share one universal checklist. Check whether a residence-permit or EU-family-member route applies.

Seasonal Work

The appropriate seasonal-work process depends on the work and its duration. It may involve a seasonal-work visa, a certificate for seasonal work or a residence permit for seasonal work. This route can apply to short stays as well as longer seasonal employment.

Extend Your Permit or Apply on New Grounds

If you need to continue your stay, check the appropriate extended-permit process. You may apply on the same or new grounds where applicable. Follow the relevant official instructions, including when to apply and how your current status affects the process.

Permanent Residence

Finland’s national permanent residence permit (P) and the long-term resident’s EU residence permit (P-EU) are distinct routes with their own conditions. EU free-movement permanent residence is a separate process. Check the current guidance and which rules apply to your application date.

Finnish Citizenship

Citizenship is a separate legal process, not another permit extension. Depending on your circumstances, a citizenship application or declaration may be relevant. Use Migri’s official guidance to identify the appropriate process.

Application dates matter: Migri distinguishes permanent-residence applications submitted before and from 8 January 2026. Follow the current official instructions for the relevant date rather than assuming earlier requirements still apply.

EU/EEA/Swiss and Nordic Routes

These routes differ from ordinary non-EU residence permits. Your own citizenship and your family member’s status both matter.

EU/EEA/Swiss Citizens

Residence-permit applications are generally not the route for these citizens. Where applicable, follow Migri’s registration of right of residence. Nordic citizens follow the separate route below. Permanent residence under free movement is also distinct from the P and P-EU permit routes.

Nordic Citizens

Citizens of Denmark, Iceland, Norway and Sweden follow a separate population-registration route through the Digital and Population Data Services Agency (DVV), rather than applying for EU registration at Migri. Follow DVV’s instructions for your move and registration.

Qualifying Non-EU Family Members

A qualifying non-EU family member of an EU/EEA/Swiss citizen may follow the residence-card process. Do not assume every family member of a Finnish citizen automatically follows this route; the applicable free-movement circumstances must be checked.
